I am from a century I wish to escape
Justin Bieber, One Direction, and YOLO swag
Where if you are intelligent, you’re strange
But cool if your pants sag
Can anyone explain that to me?

I am from boy bands, but I listen to rock
Sparkly pink, neon skinny jeans
How do I stand out in all black?
Everyone else looks the same to me
This generation is way out of whack

I am from lol, rofl, and omg
Srsly wht if we rlly talkd like this?
Where has English gone?
Surely this is not the same thing
Shakespeare must be rolling in his grave

I am from the 21st century
Where intelligence is neglected
Boy bands are worshiped
And there is no music on MTV
What happened?
And how can we fix it?
this is what I think of this generation...and I'm part of it haha

We can't fix it. Unless we brain wash every person in the world. I don't even know what started the change. Technology maybe?

You definately nailed it!
I´m even more afraid of the new "random-generation" - watching Doctor Who because the 10th Doc is cute, D&D is suddenly cool (I got bullied in school for scifi and tabletops, remember these days?) and StarTrek is nothing to be ashamed of anymore, since in the new films they all look like they are casted from different boybands.
Also "metal" is suddenly cool, while with "metal" most seem only to understand "Bullet for my Valentine":nuu:

I remember when Emos appeared and people started calling me an emo too, now, a few years later I´m called "random" while I don´t even now what this Homestuck is... Its like the 14-16 year old people are immitating a state of "Being openminded", collecting and searching for anything that could make them a real person with individuality, while thy and up as "random" - a collection of bits, parts and remnants of other lifes... Its so sad to see this attention seeking hords every day...

PS: I hope my grammar is correct, english is not my first language^^

I'm glad you like it ^^, and I know what you mean! When I was a nerd, that wasn't cool, then when I was emo/goth that wasn't cool. Now everyone is trying to be nerdy or goth (and failing quite miserably haha)

I'm only 16 and so people lump me in with this sad generation that only cares about how much they can freak out the generations of the past >_<

Oh and no worries, your grammar is just fine :)

I know the feeling. I honestly do... I talk about literature and I get blank stares. I present to the class and upstage everyone with my writing...only because they all have no idea what I just said. It is truly irritating. *Sigh* Well, there is nothing wrong with all black, and if anyone tells you differently... do what I always do; Flip them the bird and crank up the MCR... I'm very much on the same page; today's culture lies beyond my comprehension, with behavior and beliefs that make a mockery of tradition and intelligence.

However, you must remember that language and communication is alive, and constantly evolving. Every change and every addition will have a lasting mark that years down the road may become a ark of the intelligent.

Shakespeare himself was a literary rebel; his works were considered an affront to intelligence at first. Oddly, he was the Justin Beiber of his time; an icon that threw out tact and formality. He may have done a better job than Beiber, but his behavior was far from professional. He alone added a great deal of jargon to the English language.

That's not to say we should discard intelligence and embrace the madness of the age. Rather we should learn, adapt, and utilize the tools of today to enhance our culture.

Cling too long to the past and you risk becoming stagnant; it takes a rebel to bring change.

Shakespeare is one of my huge inspirations. I wish I could write like he did, but in this day and age it is difficult to write with the language of the past. Not everything about this generation is horrible though. I do like some of the ideology that has come about, but to be honest, I don't fit in very well here haha

That's a wonderful way to be; just remember that each and every generation has it's issues. I'm not much of a fan of this generation either, but like you I know that quoting Shakespeare isn't going to change them.

I would recommend taking a deeper look into why our culture has developed this way and figuring out how to use the key factors to your advantage.

For instance, Twilight is an example of terrible creativity and writing, yet it is insanely popular. Rather than criticizing it and the culture that accepts it, I want to understand what exactly made it so successful. What specifically do reader's find so interesting, and can I use it to improve/promote my own work?

Well I can answer that question actually, this culture is fascinated with the supernatural and love. Anything that feeds that fascination, no matter how weird, or poorly-written it is, becomes successful :)

I think that has always been the case. If anything, the supernatural has lost a lot of steam in the past couple centuries as science becomes more prominent.

Love is a sad topic these days because the concept has been so romanticized; love has become an ill-defined concept, emptier of meaning than anything.

There is a market for everything; I may be one of those fascinated by the supernatural, but I am far from the majority. Most of the people I encounter ridicules the fantasy genre as being unrealistic. The idea is that if it could never happen, it's not worth their time.

So just because there are a lot of people losing their minds over this stuff, they are not your target audience. Just keep in mind that what they find interesting may in fact have literary value of some sort.

I am a fanatic about the supernatural, but I trace the modern myths back to their original sources. Even the most outlandish ideas have some form of truth.

It seems very human to get frustrated with other people for not conforming to your own standards and tastes, after all we prefer to hold company with like-minded people, but I think we can be above that. Like what you like and let other people like what they like. Just my opinion.

Yes I am aware of that. Honestly, that is what this poem was supposed to be getting across. Intelligence and many other things are just not accepted in this generation. I have no problem with other people listening to what they want and doing what they want, just not when it effects others in a negative way for no good reason...I realize that my poem didn't get that across as well as it could of though. Also, I appreciate how honest you are when stating your opinion. :)

At least you didn't have to live through bad disco music, mullet hair, flaired out bell bottom pants, "dig" and "groovy", guitar belt straps, and LSD...that was pretty bad as well (except then intelligence was accepted, not disrespected)...

We all bare through this garbage; unfortunately, I think the less intelligent seem to be growing in leaps and bounds and defining what we see and hear - which is all flash and no substance.

You've got to find the right crowd to hang out with...then you won't have to worry about the childish, unintelligent junk!

I knew there are some youngsters that are above the automated sheep, some points here are sadly sadly true, the vast majority copies the continuing cavalcade of crap, I never conform - even as an older git now, still don't.
Keep above the 'pot of pathetic' unlikely it will get fixed.
At least you state your awareness of the 21st century issues with the masses...
