she sits by the window
staring out into the sunny day
all the other children smiling
as they run and play

if only she fit in with them
maybe she could have fun too
but she is just to different
doesn't act like other children do

the quiet girl just watches
with her sad and wishful eyes
nobody ever talks to her
even when she cries

at school she is lonely
sitting in the shadows
writing in her notebook
wanting to join the chatter

at home she sits in her room
drawing, writing her feelings
her parents worry about her
wonder why she is never speaking

the quiet girl just watches
with her sad and wishful eyes
nobody ever talks to her
even when she cries

as she gets older she wonders
if she'll ever be a normal girl
who talks about boys, hair, and makeup
but she never ever does

soon she is okay with that
and then she finds some friends
girls who think like she does
and boys who like that she's different

now that quiet girl who just watched before
has happy, shining eyes
everybody talks to her
and she hardly ever cries
this poem describes a girl who is left out by everyone at school because she is "different" but ends up being popular later because of that difference

I have high-functioning Autism, so I grew up with this. It was easier being home-schooled, so I didn't really get bullied to much, but people still picked on me or whispered about how weird I was when they though I couldn't hear.

Thank you for writing this. It's beautiful.

I'm glad you like it :) I was homeschooled for most of my life as well. We moved around, so I was constantly the new kid and inherently the weird one.

Yeah, that's rough. My family moved around a lot when me and my siblings were young too. :) It's nice though, when you finally find the place that feels right.
